FAQ
How does this weight and mass converter work?
It routes every conversion through kilograms as one common base unit. Your value is multiplied by the From unit's exact kilograms-per-unit factor, then that kilograms amount is divided by the To unit's own factor. The metric factors (milligram, gram, metric ton) are exact powers of ten; the imperial and US factors (ounce, pound, stone, US short ton, UK long ton) are all derived from one exact defined value, the international pound of 0.45359237 kilograms.
What is the difference between weight and mass?
Mass is the amount of matter in an object and does not change with location; weight is the force gravity exerts on that mass and varies slightly with location. In everyday use on Earth the two are treated as interchangeable, and every unit here - kilograms, pounds, ounces, stone, tons - is used for both. This tool converts the quantity you enter regardless of which sense you mean.
How many pounds are in a kilogram?
One kilogram is approximately 2.2046 pounds, from the exact definition that one pound equals 0.45359237 kilograms. Going the other way, one pound is about 0.4536 kilograms. Enter any value above to convert an exact amount in either direction.
What is a stone in weight?
A stone is a unit of mass equal to exactly 14 pounds, or about 6.3503 kilograms. It is still used in the United Kingdom and Ireland for body weight - for example, 11 stone is 154 pounds or roughly 70 kilograms. The word stone is used unchanged for the plural.
What is the difference between a tonne, a US ton and a UK long ton?
They are three different units. A tonne (metric ton) is exactly 1,000 kilograms, about 2,204.6226 pounds. A US short ton is exactly 2,000 pounds, which is exactly 907.18474 kilograms. A UK long ton is exactly 2,240 pounds, or exactly 1,016.0469088 kilograms, so one long ton is exactly 1.12 short tons. Because the word ton on its own can mean any of them, check which one a figure uses before converting it.
How many grams are in an ounce?
An ounce is exactly 28.349523125 grams - about 28.35 grams for everyday use - because it is defined as one sixteenth of the 0.45359237-kilogram pound. That is the ordinary (avoirdupois) ounce used for food, parcels and body weight.
