The Formula and the Exact Factor
Dividing by 28.349523125 turns grams into ounces, because that many grams make up one avoirdupois ounce exactly. Written as a multiplier, the same relationship is about 0.03527396195 ounces per gram, and those digits never end, so any multiplier you type is a rounded copy.
For 100 g the exact result is 3.52739619… oz, which the calculator shows as about 3.5274 oz. The last column gives each multiplier's result less that exact value.
| Multiplier used | Result for 100 g | Difference from exact (about) |
|---|---|---|
| 0.035 | 3.5 oz | −0.0274 oz |
| 0.0353 | 3.53 oz | +0.0026 oz |
| 0.03527 | 3.527 oz | −0.0004 oz |
| 0.035274 | 3.5274 oz | +0.0000038 oz |
| ÷ 28.349523125 (exact factor) | about 3.5274 oz | rounded display only |
Worked Examples
These examples divide by the full 28.349523125, then round just the answer, half up, to four decimals wherever a figure is shown; every ounce value is therefore approximate.
A decimal value. 12.5 g ÷ 28.349523125 ≈ 0.4409 oz.
A larger value. 2000 g ÷ 28.349523125 ≈ 70.5479 oz.
Pounds and ounces. For a pounds-and-ounces figure, 1000 g is about 35.27396 oz, and 16 ounces make a pound, so that is 2 lb with about 3.274 oz left over, roughly 2 lb 3.3 oz. The calculator shows decimal ounces only, so this split is done by hand.
Checking a result. Multiply the ounces by 28.349523125 to return to grams: 8.8185 oz × 28.349523125 ≈ 250.0003 g. The tiny excess over 250 comes from rounding 8.8185.
How Many Decimals to Keep
The display carries four decimals, and many uses need fewer. Here 250 g is about 8.81849 oz, and each error is the trimmed value less the exact one.
| Decimals kept | Result | Error (about) |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | 8.8185 oz | +0.00001 oz |
| 3 | 8.818 oz | −0.00049 oz |
| 2 | 8.82 oz | +0.00151 oz |
| 1 | 8.8 oz | −0.01849 oz |
The extra digits cost nothing while you calculate; trim them only for the number you report.
Common Mistakes
Multiplying instead of dividing
Multiplying by 28.349523125 turns ounces into grams. Applied to 100 g it gives about 2834.95, vastly more than the 100 you started with. A grams-to-ounces answer should be roughly 28 times smaller than the grams.
Shortening the divisor
Dividing by a rounded ounce changes the answer before any display rounding. Use the full 28.349523125 and round only at the end.
Rounding before converting back
Rounding 250 g to 8.8 oz and converting back gives about 249.4758 g, which is 0.5242 g short of the original. Keeping all four decimals returns it to within 0.0003 g.
