FAQ
How does this volume converter work?
It routes every conversion through liters as one common base unit. Your value is multiplied by the From unit's exact liters-per-unit factor, then that liters amount is divided by the To unit's own factor. The metric factors (milliliter, liter, cubic meter) are exact powers of ten; the US customary factors (fluid ounce, cup, pint, quart, gallon) are all derived from one exact defined value, the US gallon of 231 cubic inches.
Are these US or UK (imperial) measurements?
US customary liquid measure only. The cup, pint, quart, gallon and fluid ounce here are all US units. The UK / imperial versions are different and are not offered: an imperial gallon is 4.546 litres (about 20 percent larger than the US gallon's 3.785 litres), an imperial pint is 568 mL versus the US pint's 473 mL, and an imperial fluid ounce is 28.41 mL versus the US fluid ounce's 29.57 mL. If you need imperial units, do not use this converter for them.
How many US fluid ounces are in a liter?
One liter is approximately 33.814 US fluid ounces. Going the other way, one US fluid ounce is about 29.5735 milliliters, or 0.0296 liters. Enter any value above to convert an exact amount in either direction.
What is the difference between a US gallon and an imperial gallon?
A US gallon is exactly 231 cubic inches, which is 3.785411784 liters. An imperial (UK) gallon is 4.54609 liters - roughly 20 percent larger. They also divide differently in practice: a US gallon is 128 US fluid ounces, while an imperial gallon is 160 imperial fluid ounces. This converter uses the US gallon throughout.
Does this converter accept decimals and negative values?
Decimals are fine - enter any value such as 1.5 and it converts normally. Results are shown to 4 decimal places by default; a very small result that would otherwise round to 0 is shown with extra decimal places instead, so a genuinely nonzero result is never displayed as zero. Negative values are rejected, since a volume cannot be negative; zero is accepted.
