Worked Example: How to Calculate BMI
This is how the calculator finds BMI, using a 70 kg adult who is 1.75 m (175 cm) tall as the example.
- Apply the metric BMI formula. BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)² = 70 ÷ 1.75² = 70 ÷ 3.0625 = 22.86 kg/m².
- Read the category. 22.86 falls in the Healthy weight range (18.5-24.9).
- Check the extra readouts. BMI Prime = BMI ÷ 25 = 0.91 (below 1.0 means a healthy-or-lower BMI). Ponderal Index = weight ÷ height³ = 13.1 kg/m³. For this height, a healthy BMI (18.5-24.9) corresponds to a weight of 56.7-76.3 kg.

Understanding BMI
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a screening number calculated from your weight and height. It is a quick way to flag whether a weight is likely too low, in a healthy range, or too high for a given height - not a diagnosis, and not a direct measurement of body fat. Doctors and public-health agencies use it as a first-pass screening tool, alongside other measures, not as the only word on someone’s health.

The BMI formula
In metric units: BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². In US customary units: BMI = 703 × weight (lb) ÷ height (in)² - the 703 constant converts pounds and inches into the same kg/m² scale so both unit systems land on the same number for the same person. The result is always reported in kg/m², whichever units you entered.
BMI Prime and Ponderal Index
BMI Prime is simply your BMI divided by 25, the upper edge of the healthy range. A BMI Prime under 1.0 means your BMI sits at or below that healthy-range ceiling; above 1.0 means you are over it, and the amount over tells you by how much - a BMI Prime of 1.2, for instance, means a BMI 20% above the healthy-weight cutoff.
Ponderal Index is a related but less common measure: weight (kg) ÷ height (m)³, using height cubed rather than squared. Because it weights height more heavily, it is generally considered more reliable than BMI at the extremes of height - very tall or very short people are less likely to be mis-classified by Ponderal Index than by BMI, though BMI remains the far more widely used and referenced number in clinical practice.
Health risks at either end of the scale
- Higher BMI is associated with increased risk of type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and certain cancers - risk generally rises with each higher category, though the relationship is a population-level trend, not a guarantee for any one individual.
- Lower BMI carries its own risks: nutrient deficiency, weakened immune function, loss of bone density, and, in women, disrupted menstrual cycles and fertility. Being underweight is not automatically “healthier” than being in the normal range.
BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnosis
Limitations of BMI
BMI was developed from population data in the 1830s (as the Quetelet Index) and was never intended to assess an individual’s health directly. It cannot see body composition - a bodybuilder and a sedentary person of the same height and weight get the identical BMI despite very different amounts of fat versus muscle. It also does not account for where fat is carried on the body, and waist circumference or waist-to-hip ratio are better predictors of metabolic risk for a given BMI. Children, teens, and pregnancy
The fixed adult categories above only apply from age 20. Children and teens are assessed with age- and gender-specific BMI percentile charts instead, because a healthy body composition changes continuously during growth - the same raw BMI number means something different at age 8 than at age 18. BMI is also not a meaningful measure during pregnancy, when weight gain is expected and healthy. What is the BMI formula?
In metric units, BMI is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in meters squared: BMI = weight ÷ height². In imperial units, BMI is 703 times your weight in pounds divided by your height in inches squared: BMI = 703 × weight ÷ height². A 70 kg adult who is 1.75 m tall has a BMI of 22.86; a 160 lb adult who is 5'10" (70 inches) tall has a BMI of 22.96 - the small difference comes from unit-conversion rounding, not a different formula.
What are the BMI categories?
There are four standard BMI categories: underweight is below 18.5, healthy weight is 18.5 to 24.9, overweight is 25 to 29.9, and obese is 30 or above. The obese category is further divided into Class I (30-34.9), Class II (35-39.9), and Class III (40 or above). These ranges are the ones used by the CDC and WHO for adults.
Is BMI accurate for everyone?
No - BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnostic measurement, and it has known limitations. It does not distinguish between muscle and fat, so athletes and very muscular people are often classified as overweight or obese despite having low body fat. It also does not account for age, gender, or body composition, and is not designed for children, adolescents, or pregnant women, who need different reference tools entirely.
What's the difference between BMI and body fat percentage?
BMI estimates weight status from height and weight alone, while body fat percentage measures the actual proportion of your body that is fat tissue versus lean mass. Two people with an identical BMI can have very different body fat percentages depending on muscle mass, which is exactly why BMI is described as a screening tool rather than a body-composition measurement - body fat percentage is the more precise follow-up question when BMI alone is not enough.
Does my BMI tell me how many calories I need?
No - BMI only classifies weight status; it does not calculate calorie needs. Daily calorie needs depend on your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), the energy your body uses at rest, combined with your activity level. BMI and BMR use some of the same inputs (weight and height) but answer different questions - BMI describes where you are, while BMR and calorie needs describe how much energy your body requires.
What if I want my ideal weight instead of a BMI category?
BMI tells you which weight category you currently fall into, not a specific target number - your ideal weight is the reverse question: what weight would put you in the healthy range for your height. Ideal weight calculations account for height and typically gender, since healthy weight formulas differ slightly between men and women. If you know your height and want a specific target weight rather than a category, that is a distinct calculation from BMI alone.
Can I calculate BMI using pounds and inches instead of kilograms and meters?

What is BMI Prime?

What is Ponderal Index and how is it different from BMI?

Because it weights height more heavily, PI is generally considered more reliable than BMI for people at the extremes of height, where BMI can distort results; BMI remains far more widely used in practice because it is simpler and better validated across large populations.
