Understanding Body Fat Percentage
Your body fat percentage is the share of your total weight that is fat tissue, as opposed to lean mass - muscle, bone, organs, and water. This estimate vs a real measurement
A BMI-derived number is a starting point, not a measurement. Methods that look at your body directly are more accurate:

Why a BMI-based estimate can be wrong
BMI treats every kilogram the same, whether it is muscle or fat. Because the Deurenberg formula is built on BMI, it inherits that blind spot:
- Athletes and regular lifters carry extra muscle, which raises their BMI and therefore this estimate, often putting them a category higher than a direct measurement would.
- Older or sedentary people can be “skinny-fat” - a normal BMI with low muscle and higher-than-expected fat - and the estimate may read low for them.
- The formula was derived mostly from adults of European descent, so it is less reliable at the extremes of age and for some ethnic groups.
