Fractions

This section is for calculations with fractions - a numerator over a denominator, such as 3/4. The Fraction Calculator handles all four operations on two fractions, reduces a single fraction to lowest terms, and converts in both directions between a fraction and a decimal. Every fraction result is automatically reduced by dividing the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor, and an improper result also shows its mixed-number form.

A quick recap of the terms: a proper fraction has a numerator smaller than its denominator (3/4), an improper fraction has a numerator that is equal or larger (9/2), and a mixed number writes that improper value as a whole part plus a proper fraction (4 1/2). The three forms are interchangeable. Adding and subtracting need a common denominator first; multiplying and dividing do not - you multiply straight across, and dividing means multiplying by the second fraction turned upside down.
