Digital Storage Converter

Convert between bits, bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, terabytes, and petabytes - enter a value and choose your From and To units. Uses the decimal (1000-based) convention: 1 KB = 1,000 bytes.

Examples

1 gigabyte to megabytes

Value:
1
From Unit:
Gigabytes (GB)
To Unit:
Megabytes (MB)

1 gigabyte equals 1,000 megabytes using the decimal convention.

1 byte to bits

Value:
1
From Unit:
Bytes (B)
To Unit:
Bits (bit)

1 byte equals exactly 8 bits.

500 megabytes to gigabytes

Value:
500
From Unit:
Megabytes (MB)
To Unit:
Gigabytes (GB)

500 megabytes equals 0.5 gigabytes using the decimal convention.

10 gigabytes to gigabytes (same unit)

Value:
10
From Unit:
Gigabytes (GB)
To Unit:
Gigabytes (GB)

Converting a value to its own unit returns the original value unchanged: 10 gigabytes.

FAQ

How does this digital storage converter work?

It converts every value through bytes as one common base unit. Two rules are applied together: a byte is always exactly 8 bits, and the KB, MB, GB, TB and PB prefixes are decimal, meaning each step is a factor of 1,000 bytes (1 KB = 1,000 bytes, 1 MB = 1,000 KB, and so on). Your value is converted to bytes using the From unit's factor, then to the To unit using its factor.

Does this use 1,000 or 1,024 for KB, MB, and GB?

1,000 - the decimal convention. This is what most consumer software and every hard drive and SSD manufacturer uses: a 1 TB drive holds 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. The binary convention (1,024), where the units are correctly written KiB, MiB and GiB, is used by some operating systems when reporting free space, which is why a '1 TB' drive can show as about 931 GiB. This converter uses decimal only; it does not offer the binary units.

How many bits are in a byte?

Exactly 8, always. A byte is defined as 8 bits, and that never changes - it is a fixed base-2 relationship, completely separate from the question of whether a kilobyte is 1,000 or 1,024 bytes. So 1 KB is 8,000 bits and 1 MB is 8,000,000 bits under the decimal convention used here.

How many megabytes are in a gigabyte?

1,000, using the decimal convention this converter applies. So 1 GB = 1,000 MB, 1 TB = 1,000 GB, and 1 PB = 1,000 TB. Under the binary convention (GiB) it would be 1,024, but that is a different unit and is not what this page converts.

Does this converter accept decimals and negative values?

Decimals are fine - enter any value such as 2.5 and it converts normally. Results are shown to 4 decimal places by default; a very small result that would otherwise round to 0 is shown with extra decimal places instead, so a genuinely nonzero result is never displayed as zero. Negative values are rejected, since a storage size is a magnitude and cannot be negative; zero is accepted.
