Area Converter

It routes every conversion through square meters as one common base unit. Your value is multiplied by the From unit's square-meters-per-unit factor, then that square-meters amount is divided by the To unit's own factor. The eight squared-length units (square millimeter through square mile) each use the exact square of the matching linear conversion factor - for example one square foot is 0.3048 × 0.3048 = 0.09290304 square meters. The hectare and the acre are handled as their own independently defined area units.

Multiply the number of square feet by 0.09290304, which is 0.3048² (a foot is exactly 0.3048 meters). So 500 ft² is 500 × 0.09290304 = 46.4515 m². To go the other way, divide square meters by the same factor, or multiply by about 10.7639.

An acre is exactly 4,046.8564224 square meters, which is 43,560 square feet or 4,840 square yards - historically a furlong (660 feet) by a chain (66 feet). It is about 0.4047 hectares, and 640 acres make one square mile.

A hectare is a metric unit equal to exactly 10,000 square meters (a 100 m by 100 m square). An acre is an imperial / US unit equal to about 4,046.86 square meters. One hectare is roughly 2.4711 acres, and one acre is roughly 0.4047 hectares. Both are used for land area; the hectare is standard in most countries, the acre in the United States and parts of the UK.

Decimals are fine - enter any value such as 12.5 and it converts normally. Results are shown to 4 decimal places by default; a very small result that would otherwise round to 0 is shown with extra decimal places instead, so a genuinely nonzero result is never displayed as zero. Negative values are rejected, since an area cannot be negative; zero is accepted.
