Nothing is calculated until you press the button. Changing a date or pressing Clear removes the old result, so what you see always matches the dates in the form.

How Age Is Calculated from a Date of Birth

Age is worked out the way you would do it by hand. First count the whole years, one for each birthday you have had. Then count the whole months since your last birthday, and finally the days left over. Those three numbers together are your exact age.

A month counts as complete when the day of the month reaches the day you were born on. Birth dates on the 29th, 30th or 31st are covered below. The calendar decides the answer, not a fixed number of days: dividing the days you have lived by 365 slowly drifts, because years have 365 or 366 days and months have 28 to 31.

Your age goes up on your birthday. From one birthday until the day before the next, you stay the same age in years.

How to Find Your Age on a Specific Date

By default, the calculator gives your age today. It reads today's date from your device, in your own time zone, when you press the button. That is your local calendar date, not the date in London or at UTC, so if midnight has passed where you are, you get the new day.

To get your age on another day, such as the day you signed a contract or a day still to come, pick it in Calculate age as of. Your date of birth can't be later than that day. The birthday message, next birthday, countdown and totals then all refer to the day you picked.

If your device has the wrong date or time zone, a blank field can give an age that is a day out.

How Many Days, Weeks and Months Old Am I?

Next to your exact age, the result shows the same span in other units, so you can see how many days, weeks and months old you are. They all use the same two dates.

Calendar months: the completed years times 12, plus the completed months in your exact age. It follows the same month rule as your age and is not the days divided by an average month length.
Weeks: the total days divided by 7 and rounded down to whole weeks, with any leftover days shown next to it.
Days: the number of calendar days from your date of birth to the date used. Because it counts dates, not hours, a daylight-saving change cannot add or remove a day.
Hours: an estimate, the days multiplied by 24. Your time of birth is not known, so it is not an exact count of hours lived.

Your Next Birthday Countdown

The result shows the date of your next birthday, the weekday it falls on and how many days are left. The countdown starts from today, or from the date you picked.

If that date is itself your birthday, the page says so and then looks ahead to the following year. February 29 birthdays follow the February 28 rule explained below.

Birthdays on February 29

February 29 only exists in a leap year, which is a year divisible by 4, except century years that are not divisible by 400. Someone born on that day has no real birthday in the other years, so people handle it differently: some celebrate on February 28 and others on March 1.

This calculator uses February 28 in years without a February 29, and it applies that rule everywhere: the age, the birthday message, the next birthday and the countdown all agree. It is this calculator's own choice, not a rule every tool follows, so another calculator may differ by a day around the birthday.

In the first row, the birthday falls on the day itself. One day later, the age is a day older. In a leap year, February 28 is not the birthday, because the real February 29 comes the next day.

Birth Dates at the End of the Month

Not every month has a 29th, 30th or 31st. For these birth dates, a month counts as complete when your day arrives. If the month is too short to have that day, it completes when the month ends. So when a short month ends, the extra days are shown as days, and the month is counted the next day.

Some calculators complete the month earlier for these dates, so the split between months and days can differ from tool to tool, even though the time that has passed is the same.

How does this calculator work out my exact age?

It counts the whole years since your date of birth up to the day you are checking, then the whole months left over, then the remaining days, using the real calendar. It does not divide days by 365, because that shortcut drifts as years and months vary in length. Open Step-by-step calculation under your result to see each step.

Which date does the calculator count to?

Today, unless you choose another date. With Calculate age as of left blank, it uses your device's date, in your own time zone, at the moment you press the button; nothing comes from a server. If your device's date or time zone is wrong, your age can be a day out. Pick a date in that field to get your age on that day instead.

How many days old am I?

Enter your date of birth and read the Days row under Age in Every Unit. It counts the days on the calendar from your birth date to today, or to the date you picked. Every leap day is included, and a clock change can never add or remove a day.

How do I calculate my age in months?

Use the Calendar months row. It adds your completed years, 12 months each, to the whole months in your exact age, so it always agrees with the rest of the result. Dividing days by a typical month length can be a month out near a birthday, so the calculator does not use it.

How many days are there until my next birthday?

You get your next birthday's date and the days left, counted from today unless you picked another date. It is always a future date, so if today is your birthday you are told, and the countdown moves on to the following year. To count from a different day, use Calculate age as of.

How do I calculate my age by hand?

Subtract your birth year from the year you want, then subtract one more if your birthday has not happened yet by that date. For the months and days, count forward from your last birthday: whole months first, then the days left. The calculator does exactly this, using the real length of each month.

How does the calculator handle a birthday on February 29?

In a leap year your birthday is February 29. In other years it is treated as February 28, and everything on the page follows that: your age, the birthday message and the countdown. That is a choice this calculator makes. Some people celebrate on March 1, so another tool may differ by a day or two.

Why does a birth date at the end of a month not count a whole month in a shorter month?

A month is complete when your own day arrives, or when the month ends if it has no such day. So when a short month ends, someone born on the 31st has not completed another month yet. The leftover days appear in the days figure, and the month is added a day later. Some calculators count the month earlier, so results can differ.

What do the total months, weeks, days and hours mean?

They describe the same span as your exact age. Months are completed calendar months, weeks are counted in full, with any days left over listed beside them, and days are calendar days. Hours are a rough estimate (days times 24) because your birth time is unknown.

Does the time of day I was born change the result?

No. The calculator uses calendar dates only, so the hour you were born makes no difference to the years, months and days. That is also why the hours figure is only an estimate based on whole days.

Can I calculate an age on a past or future date?

Yes. Pick the date in Calculate age as of and everything on the page is worked out for that day instead of today, as long as your date of birth is not later than it. Leave the field empty to get your age today. For the date someone turns a particular age, use the Date Calculator and add that many years to the date of birth.

What happens if I enter a future or impossible date of birth?

A date of birth later than the day you are checking, today or the one you picked, is rejected with a message, because an age cannot be negative. A date that does not exist, such as February 30, is also rejected rather than moved to a nearby day. This applies to both date fields.

Is my date of birth sent or saved anywhere?

The calculation runs in your browser. Your date of birth, and the optional date you pick, are not sent to CloudCalcApp's servers or saved by the calculator. Like most websites, the site also loads Google Analytics for general visit statistics, which is separate from the calculator; the privacy policy explains it.
